Respect. Do you get enough?
Over 80% of young people believe the way they are portrayed leads to older people respecting them less.

Sign up for the chance to call for a change in negative representation!

‘Fear the hoodies; young out of control yobs hanging around street corners, intimidating the elderly, smoking, taking drugs – a lost cause. At least that is what you’d think if you believed everything you read’ writes journalist Anushka Asthana in the forward of a report called The voice behind the hood: young people’s views on anti-social behaviour, the media and older people.

The study, based on the views of many young people across the UK showed the shocking and unaltered extent to which young people feel they are negatively viewed and represented; and was the first step in a British Youth Council & YouthNet campaign called Respect?

Respect? aims to:

•challenge the use of labels (stereotypes) in media coverage

•encourage decision makers drawing up policy to make informed judgements on youth issues

•ensure young people’s views are at the heart of the debate on antisocial behaviour

In July 2007, the Respect? campaign celebrates twelve months of work to get the voices of young people heard. And this is your chance to get involved.

Please click on the Email your support link on the left and join a growing number of young people who want to make a difference.

Thank you.
