How to use this site
Many BASC members wish to establish what their MP’s views on shooting are. This site allows you to find out where your MP stands. It also allows you to lobby your MP by email and inform BASC of their response by copying the replies you receive to politics@basc.org.uk. From this information BASC will increase it’s knowledge on MPs’ attitudes to shooting.
• To find out your MP’s views
From the home page click on “Search/Email your MP”. In the next page enter your post code or constituency name. This will take you to a page listing your MP together with any record of their attitude on shooting. This is based on their own and BASC’s assessment of their position and is rated either “supportive”, “neutral”, “anti” or “unknown”.
- Supportive = I support shooting sports conducted according to the current codes of practice.
- Neutral = I am supportive of some aspects of legal shooting sports but have reservations in one or more areas.
- Anti = I am against shooting sports.
- Unknown = I do not yet have enough information to make an assessment.
You can also search the database by MP’s name. • To lobby your MP From the home page click on “Search/Email your MP” enter your postcode or your constituency name. This will take you to a page on your MP together with any recorded position on shooting. If you want to email them click “next”. This takes you to a draft email – we’ve given you a text you can send straight away if they haven’t told us their position on shooting. Alternatively you can add to or delete this and send your own email. When you’re happy with the message, fill in your details. You can preview your email before you click “send”. BASC will be informed by the system that you have sent your email – please send any response you receive to politics@basc.org.uk so that we can update the database. Some tips:- Always be polite and reasonable however frustrated you feel – you’ll be more successful in lobbying candidates.
- Don’t hesitate to send a “thank you for being committed to shooting” message to supportive MPs – it’s important that they know there’s considerable support for shooting among their constituents.
- Consider inviting MPs to look round your shoot, visit a local shooting shop or try to shoot some clays. Any shooting related activity that allows the MP to meet constituents should be welcome.
- Remember to let BASC have any response from MPs emailing to politics@basc.org.uk.
