I am writing to ask you to support the Action Mesothelioma campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of asbestos and improve the services available in Wales for people with mesothelioma and their families.

Action Mesothelioma Day, on 27 February 2009, raises awareness of mesothelioma, a terminal chest cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Despite the devastating nature of this disease only six per cent of people in the UK are aware of it. The number of deaths caused by mesothelioma continue to rise year on year and are expected to peak in 2020. Making people aware of the dangers of handling asbestos is essential to reducing the number of people who will develop mesothelioma in the future.

You can help to mark Action Mesothelioma Day by signing the Statement of Opinion, raised by Peter Black AM, in support of the call made by the British Lung Foundation for improved awareness of the dangers of asbestos as well as the need to provide better care and treatment for mesothelioma patients especially in terms of end of life care.
