Accord
Most people in Britain are in favour of inclusive schooling and opposed to discrimination in faith schools, but many politicians act as if they have public support for current restrictive policies. Use the letter below to let your MP know that you are one of the millions of people in Britain who think that it is wrong for state schools to discriminate against children, parents and teachers on the grounds of their beliefs.

Below is a template letter which can be sent to your local MP to show your support of the Accord campaign. Feel free to add a description of your own experience (as a parent, teacher, student etc.) of faith schools or religious education in schools.

N.B. If you do not wish to add your own description, please leave the relevant section blank. Thankyou.

I am writing to you as a constituent to express my support for Accord's campaign for inclusive schools and against special arrangements for religious schools. Accord is a coalition campaign which counts among its supporters religious and non-religious organisations and teachers' union ATL. Accord is chaired by Rabbi Dr Jonathan Romain.

I believe the government has a responsibility to implement policies that promote social cohesion and tolerance. State schools which divide children by their religious background, deny employment to teachers on the grounds of their beliefs and teach a biased RE curriculum have no place in modern Britain.

Like many thousands of religious and non-religious people, I support reform of faith schools. I want to see all state-funded schools operate admissions, recruitment and employment policies that do not discriminate on grounds of religious belief. I want all schools to follow a balanced, inclusive curriculum which educates students about the diversity of beliefs within Britain and I want inclusive assemblies to replace collective worship.

I hope you will pass this message on to Ed Balls and help support the Accord campaign to end religious discrimination in education.
