I’m writing to ask you to take action to make sure men everywhere get quality prostate cancer care. As you may have seen in Prostate Cancer UK’s recent Sledgehammer Fund advertising campaign, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK. Every year 40,000 men are diagnosed and 250,000 men are now living with the disease. In Scotland, nearly 3,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year. Prostate cancer is set to become the most common cancer overall in the UK in 2030. It is vital that care, support and information for those with the disease are of the best possible quality. Research carried out by Prostate Cancer UK shows that men with prostate cancer have varying experiences of care across the country. These differences are unacceptable – men everywhere deserve the same high quality prostate cancer care. To address this problem, Prostate Cancer UK has developed a quality checklist for men with prostate cancer across the UK. The checklist outlines the quality of care and support men with prostate cancer should expect to receive. It is based on the experiences and views of people affected by prostate cancer and healthcare professionals. The checklist is evidence based, patient focused and patient driven, and describes the care that men with prostate cancer should receive at each step, from the point of diagnosis through to end of life care. It will empower men to seek the best possible information, care and support and will help clinicians and commissioners ensure they are providing the care and support men want and need. You can see the checklist at prostatecanceruk.org/qualitychecklist I support Prostate Cancer UK’s quality checklist and I hope you will too. To support this work, I would like you to write to our local health board and cancer network to ask them to adopt the checklist and make sure it is made available to men with prostate cancer, particularly newly-diagnosed men. Thank you for reading this letter. I would be grateful if you could let me know which of the actions set out above you will be taking. I look forward to hearing from you.
